Vardenafil, also known by the brand name Levitra Professional, is a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor (PDE5 inhibitor) used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). It is available in 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg, and 20 mg tablets and is taken orally. Vardenafil is also available in a dissolving tablet form.
Vardenafil works by relaxing the blood vessels and increasing blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation. This results in an erection. Vardenafil does not cure ED and does not prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
Vardenafil is in a class of medications called PDE5 inhibitors. Vardenafil is thought to work by decreasing the action of a chemical in the body called phosphodiesterase type 5. This chemical is responsible for breaking down cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), which is a substance that is responsible for the dilation of blood vessels.
Side Effects
Common side effects of vardenafil include:
- headache
- flushing
- stuffy or runny nose
- upset stomach
- back pain
More serious side effects of vardenafil include:
- vision changes or sudden vision loss
- ringing in your ears, or sudden hearing loss
- chest pain or heavy feeling, pain spreading to the arm or shoulder, nausea, sweating, general ill feeling
- irregular heartbeat
- swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet
- shortness of breath
- feeling light-headed, fainting
- painful or prolonged erection (lasting more than 4 hours)
If you experience any of the following side effects, stop taking vardenafil and seek medical attention or call your doctor immediately:
- allergic reactions such as skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue
- breathing problems
- changes in hearing
- changes in vision
- chest pain
- fainting
- fast or irregular heartbeat
- memory problems
- numbness of an arm or leg
- one-sided weakness
- painful or prolonged erection (lasting more than 4 hours)
- ringing in the ears
- seizures
- severe or persistent back or muscle pain
- severe or persistent dizziness
- severe or persistent vision changes
- sudden decrease or loss of hearing
- sudden decrease or loss of vision in one or both eyes
- sudden severe headache
Interactions
Vardenafil may interact with other medications. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use. During pregnancy, vardenafil should be used only when prescribed. It is unknown if this drug passes into breast milk.
Overdose
If someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing, call 911. Otherwise, call a poison control center immediately. US residents can call their local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. Canada residents can call a provincial poison control center.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
Storage
Store at room temperature away from light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep all medications away from children and not flush medications down the toilet or pour them into a drain unless instructed to do so. Properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer needed.
